"Release early, release often" is an allusion to the line "Vote Early. Vote Often". At the 'tute, they had an "award" designated as "The Big Screw." It was literally a 3-foot (?) long metal screw. Students could vote for their least favorite professor (i.e., the one that screwed them the most).

Voting was a purely financial endeavor. Each vote cost a penny, so you'd have to pay to "elect" your professor the screwiest. Each year, the winning (losing?) professor would have his/her name inscribed in the screw and get to choose a charity to which the money would be donated.

Of course, many have said "release early, release often" since then, but for me, it hearkens back to the days of beer poing, panty raids, and jello wrestling that was my college career.

I'm fond of saying lots of things. In this case, it is "release and iterate" :-)
